FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out: Have you experienced the fear of missing out on something?
At one level, fear is healthy. “Fear” is an emotion induced by a perceived threat. It is a natural human emotion. It is a basic survival mechanism. It protects us from danger. However, there is also unhealthy fear. In the Greek, Phobos = Phobia which is unhealthy fear. It is disproportionate to the danger posed. You may have heard the acronym – FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real. It is when someone overestimates the danger and underestimates the ability to cope.
Common phobias include fears in health, finances, failure, growing old, death, loneliness, rejection, making mistakes, public speaking, flying, heights, snakes, spiders and most recently FOMO – fear of missing out or not being special.
The Spirit of God does not produce negative fear. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge – Proverbs 1:7 – fear is not to be frightened but the opposite. It is an understanding of who God is. It means to respect, reverence, honor, worship God.
What is the key to living without fear – let’s review Proverbs 1:33 – living without panic or terror – living without fear or dread of evil is a choice. If we want to live wisely, we will choose to fear (reverence, honor, respect) God (v.29) and listen to Him. He promises that we will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm (v. 33).
Matt 10:1, 16-31 – Jesus states 3 times – “Do not be afraid – (vv 26, 28, 31). The moment Jesus calls his 12 disciples, he sends them out on a mission to proclaim the kingdom of heaven is near and to demonstrate – heal the sick. We may face opposition, we may be opposed, face hatred, be persecuted and called names, but Jesus says 3 times “Do not be afraid – (vv 26, 28, 31).
What a great promise for our lives. We do not have to live in fear of anything and do not have to fear missing out on anything. Holy Spirit provides guidance and God fulfills all our needs.
God gives us the ability to live Victoriously, make this month the boldest and best yet!
